Local News in Brief : Girl Needs Transfusion
Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles was seeking a donor of a rare blood type Wednesday to provide a transfusion for a 10-year-old girl suffering from sickle cell anemia. Hospital officials called the girl’s need for the transfusion “a life-threatening situation.”
LeKeysha Myles of Los Angeles was admitted to the hospital Saturday night suffering from the blood cell deficiency. According to the girl’s mother, Charlene Myles, a transfusion of B-positive blood was administered to LeKeysha, but she had a bad reaction because the blood contained a complex called “Duffy antigens” that her body wouldn’t accept.
The hospital’s blood bank asked prospective donors who have B-positive blood with Duffy-free antigens to give blood in LeKeysha Myles’ name at their nearest blood donation center, or to call the blood bank at (213) 669-2441 to make an appointment.
LeKeysha was listed in stable but guarded condition.
