Local News in Brief : City Treasurer Appointed

Share

John Bramhall, 63, has been appointed city treasurer for Lawndale. The Torrance resident serves on that city’s Planning Commission and in 1982 retired as assistant city administrator and city clerk in Commerce.

The treasurer’s post has been vacant since Oct. 1, when Ray Wood was fired for making speculative investments in which Lawndale lost an estimated $1.68 million.

The City Council interviewed three candidates for the treasurer’s job on Monday night and selected Bramhall, who was investments manager for the Southern California Joint Powers Insurance Authority from 1977 to 1980. Lawndale is one of 21 cities participating in the pool insurance program for municipalities.

Bramhall’s salary and starting date are being negotiated, officials said.

The city also is seeking to fill the city manager’s job and has received 66 applications, according to acting City Manager Paula Cone. A panel of city managers will review selected applicants on April 7 and the top candidates will be interviewed by the City Council, she said.
