Woman Sentenced to Wear Sign That She’s Sex Offender
A former preschool worker has been ordered to wear a sign around her neck about her sex offenses after she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of sexually assaulting two girls.
Superior Court Judge Warren Chan on Wednesday gave Julia Lynn Guptill-Gilbert a choice between spending 30 days in jail or for 60 days wearing the sign every time she goes out in public.
Guptill-Gilbert chose to wear the sign. She taught at a Montessori school at the time of the assaults on two girls, aged 4 and 5.
Chan left it up to county prosecutors to decide the size and exact wording of the sign to be worn by the 19-year-old woman, who is five months pregnant.
Guptill-Gilbert has moved to California, raising questions about how the sign order will be enforced.
Chan scheduled a court hearing on May 4 to find out whether California authorities will assume responsibility for monitoring the punishment. The 60-day period for wearing the sign is not to begin until after that.
