Local News in Brief : Westminster : Gillespie to Be Honored by Firehouse Renaming

Share

Firefighters will rename Fire Station No. 2 Saturday in memory of the late Mayor Elden F. Gillespie, who died Feb. 6 after a long illness.

Firefighters also plan to dedicate a 3-foot marble monument, paid for by the firefighters to honor Gillespie, “because of his work in the community,” said Paul Gilbrook, president of the Fire Fighter’s Assn.

More than 200 people are expected, including the mayor’s widow, Evelyn; daughter, Lynda; Supervisor Roger Stanton; Mayor Chuck V. Smith; City Council members and community and business leaders.

“Station 2 had sentimental meaning to the firefighters and Elden,” Gilbrook said. “Every day when the mayor was bedridden, the firefighters would always go over and visit him. Elden lived right down the street. So it was kind of natural for us to dedicate the fire station in his memory.”

The dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the fire station, 15061 Moran St.
