Sir William McMahon, 80, former prime minister of Australia. McMahon served as prime minister and head of the Liberal Party in 1971-72 after John Gorton was ousted as prime minister and party leader in an intra-party feud. But McMahon, who entered Parliament in 1949, lost to Gough Whitlam the following year. In Sydney on Thursday of cancer.
