A baby born without most of her brain but maintained temporarily on a respirator in hopes her organs could be donated, died eight days after life-support was shut off, Loma Linda University Medical Center officials announced. The baby, born in Texas, was known to the public only as Baby Cassandra. The girl’s heart valves, corneas and adrenal gland were donated for transplant to other children, but her major organs were unsuitable for transplant because they deteriorated after the respirator was shut off, hospital spokesman Dick Schaefer said.
