Herzog Pardons 2 Terrorists Convicted of Attacks on Arabs
President Chaim Herzog, as a Passover holiday gesture, today ordered the release of two imprisoned members of a Jewish terror group convicted of armed attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Presidential spokesman Ami Gluska said Ira Rappaport and Yitzhak Geniram had been pardoned in part because they expressed regret for their actions.
The two were convicted of belonging to “The Jewish Underground,” a terror ring that carried out attacks on Arabs in the occupied West Bank in the early 1980s.
The New York-born Rappaport was convicted of aggravated assault for attaching a bomb in 1980 to the car of a former mayor of Nablus, who lost his legs in the explosion.
Geniram lent his car to attackers who killed three Arab students at the Hebron Islamic College and wounded 30 in a 1983 attack. He also helped gather explosives for a 1980 attack on Arab mayors in the West Bank.
