NICOSIA, Cyprus — Earthquakes hit southern Iran and eastern Turkey on Wednesday and Thursday, injuring at least 25 people, Tehran Radio and Turkish officials reported.
A quake measuring 5 on the Richter scale injured 25 villagers and destroyed 15 houses late Wednesday around Dehdasht, 340 miles south of Tehran, the radio said.
Three other tremors shook the area overnight, carving holes in the ground and causing rock slides, according to the radio, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corp.
The governor of nearby Behbehan was quoted as saying relief workers were helping people in five villages hit by the quakes, some of whom had been housed in 500 tents.
In Ankara, Turkish officials said an earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern town of Kigi in Bingol province Thursday, after two smaller tremors overnight.
No casualties were reported, but 35 houses sustained minor damage.
A spokesman for the Earthquake Research Institute in Ankara said the epicenter of Thursday’s tremor was 425 miles southeast of Istanbul, putting it near Kigi.
