Roundup : Deville Leads Fullerton Past UC Santa Barbara, 8-0

Cal State Fullerton scored four times in the second inning and three more times in the fourth en route to an 8-0 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. rout of UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Fullerton.

Danny Deville (4-0), who retired 14 consecutive batters at one point, allowed 4 hits and struck out 4 in the complete-game victory.

The Titans scored their second-inning runs with two outs. After Keith Kaub led off with a fly ball to right field, UCSB starter Jeff Lynch (1-6) walked Brent Mayne.

Jim Osborn struck out and Mark Razook walked. Bobby Jones and Greg Mannion singled home one run each and Rex Peters singled home two more.

The Titans (25-10 overall, 4-2 in the PCAA) chased Lynch in the third inning. After Mike Ross and Kaub led off with walks, Mayne singled home Ross. After a Lynch wild pitch that advanced Kaub and Mayne to second and third, Osborn drove in Kaub with a scoring fly ball. Razook followed with a run-scoring double to left.

Jones closed out Fullerton’s scoring in the sixth with a home run to left off reliever Eddie Pierce. The loss dropped UCSB to 16-25 and 1-5.

In another PCAA baseball game:

Fresno State 5, UC Irvine 0--Fresno State (32-6 overall, 6-0 in the PCAA and ranked No. 3 in the nation) won its 15th consecutive game, completing a three-game sweep of Irvine at Fresno. The loss was the fourth straight for Irvine (20-18-1, 1-5).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 4-4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 5-2, Chapman senior Jeff Mooney (6-3) allowed seven hits, walked one and did not get a strikeout in 6 innings in the second game at Hart Park.

In the first game, Chapman’s Dave Cantrell (0-3) took the loss.

Chapman is 20-14-1 overall, 9-4 in CCAA play, and Dominguez Hills is 12-18, 3-9.

In nonconference baseball:

Southern California College 2-3, UC San Diego 4-2--Eric Gasner hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Josh Johnson (2-5) threw a one-hitter to lead host SCC (12-18) to a doubleheader split. Jim Martinez went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs for UCSD in the first game.

In CCAA softball:

Chapman 6-7, UC Riverside 0-1--Winning pitcher Jacki Blake (11-6) pitched a four-hitter in the first game and Cheri Schreck (10-5) threw a five-hitter for Chapman (28-18, 7-5) in the second game at Riverside.

In nonconference softball:

Hawaii Pacific 13-11, Pacific Christian 0-4--Hawaii Pacific scored 13 runs on 8 hits and 5 errors in the first game, and Sharon Sweeny went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs in the second game at Pacific Christian.

In men’s nonconference tennis:

Pepperdine 7, UC Irvine 2--Fifth-ranked Pepperdine (17-4) broke Irvine’s 10-game winning streak by winning the singles matches, 5-1, and the doubles matches, 2-1, at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Irvine is 17-4.
