FBI agents have repeatedly warned black South African anti-apartheid activists in the United States that they may be targets of “hit squads” dispatched by the Pretoria government, the activists and their U.S. lawyers said. But the activists also said they are wary of FBI requests for personal meetings because they fear that the agents’ real intent is to gather information on their political activities and possibly pass it to the white minority South African regime. The activists include the rebel African National Congress’ Washington representative, Dumi Matabana, and Nomande Ngubu, a South African employee of the United Mine Workers Union in Washington who has been active in the anti-apartheid movement.
