Quarterbacks Marc Wilson of the Raiders and Mark Malone of the Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t won popularity contests with their current clubs but could be what the San Diego Chargers are looking for.

The Chargers have needed a quarterback since Dan Fouts retired. The much-maligned Malone flew to San Diego Monday night so the Chargers could check him over.

The Chargers also were reported to be interested in Wilson, who regained his starting job last season and is now a free agent, but a Charger spokesman said there were no serious talks.

Wilson said by phone from his off-season home in Seattle: “I read it in the paper. I don’t know anything about it. If I gave credence to everything that’s been written in the off-season, I’d go nuts.”

Steeler Coach Chuck Noll has said it would be difficult for Malone to play again in Pittsburgh because of the fan hostility he experienced last season.
