Sheriff’s Operations Leader

Lt. Robert Mirabella has been promoted to operations administrator of the Lakewood sheriff’s station, placing him second in command under Capt. Elmer Omohundro, station commander. Mirabella, 44, has been watch commander at the Norwalk sheriff’s station since 1984. His 19-year career with the Sheriff’s Department also includes service in crime prevention, patrol, detective bureau, hostage negotiations and as physical training instructor at the Sheriff’s Academy. Mirabella replaces Lt. John Anderson, administrative lieutenant at the Lakewood station for three years, who has been named to a newly created position as Sheriff Sherman Block’s liaison to the chief administrative officer of Los Angeles County. Anderson will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive disaster and emergency plan to coordinate response efforts of all county departments.

Officer for Contract Cities

Judith W. Hathaway, a member of the La Habra Heights City Council for 18 years and a former mayor, has been elected second vice president of the California Contract Cities Assn. Her primary responsibility will be to plan and organize programs for the monthly meetings of the association’s board of directors. The association represents 63 cities that contract with the county or other agencies for some of their municipal services. Hathaway has been active in the association since 1984, serving as treasurer, chairman of the county and city contracts committee and as a member of the legislative committee. She is a math teacher at Orange Grove Junior High in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District.

Youth Art Show Winners

Luke McCloud, a student at Wilson High School in Long Beach, and Darren Gates, a seventh-grader at Stanford Junior High in Long Beach, were first-place winners in the Long Beach Jewish Community Center’s annual Norman Gottlieb Youth Art Show. They won $40 gift certificates at an art supply store. Second-place awards of $20 gift certificates went to Nick Tran, Long Beach Poly High School, and Camille Walker, Bancroft Junior High. Los Alamitos High School student Bill Bixby and Pamela Gregory from Jefferson Junior High in Long Beach placed third with $10 certificates. A total of 60 students participated.

Ecologist on College Board

John H. Crow, founder and president of an environmental consulting firm in New Jersey, has been elected to the Whittier College Board of Trustees. Crow graduated from Whittier College in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Four years later he earned a Ph.D. at Washington State University, then became an assistant professor of biology at Rutgers University. He now is a member of the Planning Board in Mansfield Township, Warren County, N.J., and his company has written and planned that county’s solid waste management plan, which will lead to New Jersey’s first trash-to-energy facility.

Top Flute Player Selected

Flutist Cynthia Grinstead, 18, a senior at Poly High School in Long Beach, has been selected to play first-chair flute for the National High School Honor Orchestra. She will perform with the orchestra April 23 in Indianapolis for the Music Education National Conference. The straight-A student is in the PACE program of academically accelerated curriculum, serves as senior class treasurer, and for the last two years has played first-chair flute in the All-Southern California High School Honor Orchestra.

3 Brothers Earn Eagle Rank

Three teen-agers from the same family will receive Eagle Scout awards during a Court of Honor ceremony Saturday at St. Raymond Catholic Church, Downey. The highest award possible in the Boy Scout program will go to Hohman brothers Jerome, 17, a student at Warren High School; Gregory, 15, a student at Downey High School, and Thomas, 14, a student at East Middle School in Downey. All are members of Troop 813 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Downey and have earned the Ad Altari Dei Catholic religious medal. They are the sons of Vince and Karen Hohman of Downey.

Youth Sits on County Board

Victor Duemas, a junior at South Gate High School, served as 1st District “supervisor for a day” at a county Board of Supervisors meeting. His selection was part of student awareness day sponsored by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Duemas met with Supervisor Pete Schabarum and received a county certificate of appreciation for his participation in the program, which aims to promote youth awareness of career opportunities in government, business and education.

Panhellenic to Fete Officers

Downey Panhellenic Alumnae will hold an installation dinner at 6 tonight at the Szechwan restaurant for these 1988-89 officers: Betty Lemke, president; Lois Diess, vice president; Jessie Kennedy, secretary; Harriett Stevens, corresponding secretary; Madeline Koenig, treasurer. Wilma Myers will be the installing officer. Mary Sherwin is the outgoing president, and Lemke was vice president last year.
