Eng Didn’t Favor Recall, Chu Says

Regarding your article, “Monterey Park Candidates Seek Accord” in last Thursday’s San Gabriel Valley section, your report that my husband, Michael Eng, “actively supported the movement to recall” council members Cam Briglio, Barry Hatch and Patricia Reichenberger is grossly inaccurate.

On the contrary, although my husband actively participated in the successful effort to rescind the “English as the Official Language” resolution passed by the council, including Briglio, Hatch and Reichenberger, he never participated in or endorsed the recall effort.

In fact, at the City Council meeting on March 23, 1987, Mike spoke against the recall effort, saying that while we have the right to vigorously criticize council actions, political disagreements alone cannot justify a recall of duly elected city officials.

In closing, although I was not asked by your reporter, I was opposed to the English language resolution and to the recall effort because both were divisive and contrary to the collective best interests of our residents and businesses.

Judy Chu, candidate for Monterey Park City Council

Editor’s note: The English language resolution, which advocated the use of English as the nation’s official language, was later rescinded when Briglio changed his position.
