Dirk De Mol of Belgium sprinted away from Thomas Wegmuller of Switzerland in the final 100 meters to win the 86th Paris-to-Roubaix cycling race through the back-country roads of northern France.

De Mol and Wegmuller spent the last 40 kilometers together after they had broken away from a five-man group. Wegmuller led the way over the final kilometer until the final sprint, when De Mol easily passed the Swiss to win going away.

In third place was France’s Laurent Fignon, who made a late charge over the last 20 kilometers (12 miles) but still finished more than a minute behind.

The race is over 266 kilometers (165 miles). The cyclists have to race 60 kilometers (35 miles) over cobblestoned lanes in rural towns and villages, the feature which has made the race a classic.
