A bout of influenza will force Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti to miss the opening of Donizetti’s “Elisir d’Amore” at La Scala on Wednesday night, opera house officials in Milan, Italy, said. La Scala officials said doctors had ordered Pavarotti, 53, to rest because of a persistent fever. Pavarotti, who may be able to sing in later performances of the opera, will be replaced on Wednesday by the 30-year-old Italian tenor Vincenzo La Scola.
