Israeli troops wounded at least 42 people during violent protests in the Gaza Strip hometowns of Palestinians deported to Lebanon for anti-Israeli activity, according to hospital officials in Gaza City. Five of the eight Palestinians deported from the occupied areas were from the Gaza Strip. The wounded were treated for injuries from rubber bullets, beatings and tear-gas inhalation, the hospital officials said. In Jerusalem, Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir defended the deportations and warned that more would be expelled if necessary to restore peace. At the same time, U.S. Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering accused Israel of using excessive force and denying legal rights in its handling of the unrest.
