Iranian troops pushed across the mountainous border into Iraq and killed or wounded 2,700 enemy soldiers and shot down three aircraft in a major new offensive in Sulaymaniyah province in the strategic Kurdistan region, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported. Iraq, however, said the assault was repulsed with several thousand Iranian casualties. In separate action, Iraq fired two long-range missiles into Tehran and two more into Tabriz, in northwest Iran, a military spokesman in Baghdad said. Iran reported civilian casualties.
