Orange Unified School District teachers staged a one-day boycott of classes and picketed for better pay and fringe benefits, the first strike in the 35-year history of the district. Hundreds of the district’s 1,100 teachers marched and chanted in front of their schools. No serious incidents or confrontations resulted. District officials said about 60% of its teachers were absent, but the teachers union put the number at more than 80%. District officials said about 20% of the 24,500 students stayed away. Normal absenteeism is about 2%. The 108-square-mile district provides schools for the city of Orange, Villa Park, and parts of Anaheim, Garden Grove and Santa Ana.
