Local News in Brief : Orange : Council OKs $90 Million in Capital Projects
The City Council has approved $90 million in capital improvements, including construction of a new police station.
City Manager William Little said improvements, approved unanimously Tuesday, are needed to accommodate the city’s growth. The city of 100,000 is expected to grow by as much as 12% in five years.
In addition to the $12-million police building, the city will spend $34 million in the next five years on road improvements.
The new police station will be built at 637 W. Struck Ave., where the city now stores vehicles and other equipment. Little said an architect and contractor will be selected later this month and construction should begin late this year.
The new police station, which will be three times larger than the one on East Chapman Avenue, is expected to be ready in two years.
Also scheduled for construction by 1993 are a new main library, a community center and two more fire stations. Exact construction costs for these facilities have not yet been determined.
Included in next fiscal year’s $16.5-million budget for capital improvements is $1 million to widen Chapman Avenue west of the Old Towne Plaza, Little said.
