Thaw in Tadzhikistan Triggers Landslides

MOSCOW —
Freak landslides caused by a sudden thaw have killed a number of people in the Soviet Central Asian republic of Tadzhikistan, the Tass news agency said Wednesday.
It quoted rescue workers in the Gorno-Badakhshan region near the Afghan border as saying that schools, hospitals and houses were damaged in several populated areas and an unspecified number of people had been killed.
