NASA Honors 7 Workers at Parker Bertea

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has presented the prestigious Silver Snoopy award to seven civilian aerospace workers at Parker Bertea Aerospace Group in Irvine.

The presentation was made by Astronaut William Thornton to Jose Jatip and John Kochan, both of Santa Ana; Dave Minjarez and Neale Davis, both of Orange; Ata Onursal of Huntington Beach; William McCoy of Garden Grove and Monte Denning of Laguna Beach.

Snoopy serves as the watchdog for crew safety during manned space flights. Parker Bertea provides more than 1,000 parts used in the space shuttle.

Gordon Palmer has been named Elk of the Year by Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge 2444.

Jason Curtis of Anaheim Hills, a graduating senior at Canyon High School, has been named winner of a $1,000 scholarship from the Canyon Hills Ebell Club. Jason, active in various school activities and clubs, plans to attend the Caltech and major in aeronautical engineering.

Carl R. Nelson, director of public works for the Orange County Environmental Management Agency, was named one of the Top 10 Public Works Leaders in the nation by the Chicago-based American Public Works Assn., in concert with a host of other professional organizations.

Nelson has managed the planning, design, construction and maintenance of all county funded highways, harbors, flood control and drainage facilities since 1975.

Previously he worked for the Orange County Flood Control District for 15 years.

He holds bachelor and master of science degrees from UCLA.

Fullerton restaurant owner Keith Manning, who donated 170 complete Thanksgiving meals to needy people, has received the 1988 Volunteer Award from the District 10 California Park and Recreation Society.

Manning, an Orange resident, originally planned to serve 150 people, but 170 showed up for the complete holiday meal served by Manning’s staff, who gave up their own holiday to help.

Manning owns The Plaza restaurant at Villa del Sol and was nominated for the award by the Fullerton Community Services Department.

Thirty-year Fullerton Fire Department veteran Capt. Don Miller has retired from active duty. He rose through the ranks to captain. “He has been an excellent role model for those firefighters who wanted to promote to higher ranks,” said Fire Marshal Marc Martin.

UC Irvine English professor John Carlos Rowe, who professes, “I never teach the same course over again in precisely the same order,” has been named recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award for Teaching from the college’s Academic Senate.

Rowe, author of three books, was honored in 1981 with the Distinguished Teaching Award from the UCI Alumni Assn.
