Local News in Brief : Award in Carlton Shooting

Los Angeles City Councilmen Robert Farrell and Michael Woo announced plans Thursday to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the men who shot Grammy Award-winning jazz guitarist Larry Carlton outside his Hollywood Hills home April 6.

Carlton, who suffered minor nerve damage after being shot in the neck upon returning to his home and studio, is in “a lot of pain” but is expected to fully recover within two years, according to his manager, Charlie Lico.

Detective Ernie Bassett said an investigation has yielded few leads. Carlton simply described his assailants as two black youths, possibly teen-agers, and a published composite drawing has netted no success, he said. Police have no motive for the crime and Carlton’s whereabouts are being kept secret because of it.

“Normally, there’s a reason why a crime is committed and that leads to a motive and something we can go on,” Bassett said. “There’s none of that here. He has no problems . . . no drugs, no bad business deals, no family problems.”
