The average American will have to work 126 days this year--until May 5, the latest ever--just to pay federal, state and local taxes, the Tax Foundation said. That is two days more than in 1987, the Washington-based research organization said. The best taxpayers have fared in the last decade was in 1984, when most of the big 1981 federal income-tax reduction had taken effect and “Tax Freedom Day” fell on April 28.
