Court Upholds Downgrading of Cathedral
A superior court judge has upheld the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral here in downgrading the church’s status to a mission and turning control of the building over to Bishop Joseph Heistand.
The cathedral’s board of directors, known as the vestry, took the action in November, 1987, to make the financially stricken church eligible for financial aid and management assistance from the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona. But some parishioners objected and took the vestry to court.
In upholding the action of the vestry, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Alan Kamin said state corporate law empowers a board of directors to take such an action.
