A 28-year-old man drowned off San Pedro on Saturday morning after a wave swept him from the rocky jetty where he had been fishing.
Witnesses told Los Angeles County lifeguards that the man, Chung Chang Wu, 28, of El Monte, slipped off the rocks near White Point about 9:35 a.m.--just 40 minutes before the lifeguards arrive for their daily shift at nearby Royal Palms State Beach.
Lifeguards, notified by fire officials that a man was in the water, spent an hour and 20 minutes searching for him. They recovered his body shortly after 11 a.m., said Lt. George Whitehead of the Cabrillo Beach lifeguard station.
Whitehead said the rocky cove near White Point is a popular spot among anglers for bass, rock cod and halibut.
A drowning occurs there “every three or four years,” he said.
