Trade ministers from the United States, Canada, Japan and the European Economic Community met in seclusion at a lodge on Quadra Island near Vancouver, Canada, for talks on issues ranging from patent protection to Japanese quotas on U.S. beef. The meeting focused on the current round of talks within the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The Reagan Administration, joined by Canada, is pressing for new GATT rules to cover services such as insurance and computer software, trade-related investment, agriculture and protection for patents, copyrights and trademarks.
