A man who chained himself to a bridge for three days and demanded that it be saved from erosion gave up his vigil Monday and also withdrew as a candidate for state Senate.

The demonstrator, Dan Lawrence, said he did not want anyone to believe his action was a political stunt. He announced that he would support his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Marc Basnight.

Lawrence chained himself to the Outer Banks bridge Friday morning to call attention to damage from an Atlantic storm last week. He said that he left his post for two hours Sunday night after two men in a car threatened to kill him.
