The popularity of San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos has dropped nearly in half--with only about a third of those polled viewing him favorably--just five months after he was elected by one of the biggest margins in the city’s history. A poll by the San Francisco Chronicle said the public now blames Agnos for losing the Olympic Games, the battleship Missouri and the city’s financial security. Only 34% now regard him favorably, compared to 61% just before the November election. Agnos blamed his predecessor, Dianne Feinstein, for San Francisco’s woes and said his ratings could sink even further if he has to lay off workers, cut programs and raise taxes to solve the city’s problems.
