The Environmental Protection Agency announced that it will conduct a nationwide survey to determine the extent of contaminated drinking water caused by agricultural pesticides. The agency said it would look for more than 100 pesticides in about 1,350 private and community wells supplying drinking water. “In some cases, the presence of pesticides in well water may pose human health risks,” EPA Administrator Lee M. Thomas said in a statement announcing the study, which will begin this week in George County, Miss. About half the country’s population obtains its drinking water from 13 million private and 51,000 community wells, he said.
