Taiwan Allows Letters to Be Mailed to China
The Taiwan post office accepted letters addressed to China for the first time Monday, easing communication between families and friends divided for almost 40 years.
The 3,000 letters mailed to China on Monday will be handed to the Taiwan Red Cross, which will forward them through Hong Kong. Previously, letters to China had to be mailed privately in third countries.
Last month, the Taiwan post office lifted a ban on receiving mail from China.
The Nationalist government last November eased its hard-line policy of “no contact” with Beijing by easing a ban on travel to the mainland to allow Taiwan residents to visit their relatives. Taipei and Beijing have been technically at war since 1949, when the Nationalists were driven from China by the Communists.
