A 9-year-old girl whose frostbitten lower legs were amputated after she was abandoned in an unheated building walked out of a hospital today, and doctors said she had most of the abilities and all the energy of a cheerful youngster.

Darlwin Carlisle, who has been fitted with artificial limbs, limped slightly but smiled and held two dolls as she walked down the front steps of La Rabida Children’s Hospital.

Darlwin will live with her great-grandmother Katie Carlisle, in Gary, Ind.

Darlwin lived with her mother, Darlwin Britt, in Gary before being found Jan. 17 by a construction worker in an unheated, padlocked apartment building. Authorities said the girl apparently had been locked inside the freezing attic several days earlier by her mother, who allegedly abandoned the girl.

Britt, 25, has pleaded innocent to charges of felony child neglect.
