A 32-year-old mentally handicapped man who wandered away from Disneyland on Friday was discovered Monday at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.

Cornell Emmet Douglass, who has the intelligence of a 5-year-old, had been staying unidentified at the medical center since Saturday, when Los Angeles police found him in the restroom of a downtown Los Angeles gas station and took him there.

Medical center staff recognized Douglass from pictures in the media and alerted police, who notified the man’s family in the San Bernardino suburb of Muscoy.

Police were unsure how Douglass ended up in Los Angeles. Douglass had been touring Disneyland with fellow students from a special school for the handicapped when he was separated from the group.

Douglass, who was scheduled to be released from the hospital Tuesday, became lost shortly after 4 p.m. Friday after he was taken to a restroom by a female teacher, said Richard Drake, principal of the Fontana Adult School where Douglass was enrolled as a full-time student. The teacher waited for him to come out and when he didn’t, the teacher sent her husband in, but he was gone, said Drake.

Drake speculated that Douglass had wandered out of the bathroom through the employee’s exit.
