Local News in Brief : Cities OK Private Buses

Share

A private bus system that will replace some service now provided by the Southern California Rapid Transit District has been approved by 19 San Gabriel Valley cities and La Habra Heights.

Since mid-March, city councils from Temple City to Pomona have approved the Foothill Transit Zone, which will contract with private bus companies. Some service will begin by July.

County Supervisor Pete Schabarum, whose district includes the service area, estimates that the transit zone can provide the same service as RTD at a savings of $9 million annually.

By 1990, the first year the transit zone will be in full operation, it will provide about one-third of the bus service in the 20 communities.
