The mummified remains of Pope Celestine V, who died in the 13th Century, were recovered intact by Italian police after they were stolen from a cathedral. Police found the remains in a plywood box hidden in a cemetery wall in Amatrice, 35 miles south of L’Aquila, by following two suspected thieves, who escaped in the dark. The remains were stolen Sunday night from L’Aquila, 70 miles northeast of Rome, where they had been held since 1327.
