Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian and injured at least 13 others during violent clashes with protesters in the occupied territories Wednesday, the eve of Israel’s 40th anniversary.

Israel has barred 1.5 million Palestinians in the occupied territories from crossing into Israel ahead of fresh unrest expected today, the country’s Independence Day.

Underground leaders of the Palestinian uprising in the territories, in a leaflet, have vowed to escalate attacks against Israel to avenge the killing of Palestinian guerrilla leader Khalil Wazir in Tunisia on Saturday.

The military said a Palestinian was shot by troops who broke up a rock-throwing crowd during an army-imposed curfew at the Nusseirat camp in the occupied Gaza Strip.

The killing of 22-year-old Nasser Mohammed, who was shot in the stomach, raised the Palestinian death toll in the unrest to 156.
