The police in Franklin, where one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was fought, have decided to remove the Confederate battle flag symbols from their cars and uniforms.

Police Lt. Bolin Fitzgerald said the change was suggested after an internal investigation of the department last year. “I don’t think we black officers should have to wear something we don’t represent,” he said.

Fitzgerald said the Confederate logo has been taken off the city emblem on police cars and new sleeve patches have been ordered. The emblems on patrol cars now display the American and Tennessee state flags.
