Teachers’ Contract Calls for 12% Raise

After almost 10 months of negotiations, teachers and school officials at the Ventura County Community College District have hammered out a tentative agreement that will give teachers a 12% raise over two years.

Larry Miller, a spokesman for the American Federation of Teachers, Local 1828, said faculty members at Ventura, Moorpark and Oxnard colleges are expected to ratify the contract at separate meetings this week.

The agreement ends a two-week teacher slowdown that began after the district refused to grant teachers a 6% raise recommended by a state-appointed fact-finder who was brought in to break the deadlock.

Teachers say they are pleased with the contract terms because it grants them the equivalent of a 6% raise each year for two years. The contract call for an initial 5% salary increase retroactive to last July.

It mandates an additional 7% salary increase beginning next July 1, plus pay increases based on years of service and an extra salary step for part-time teachers.

Miller said the new contract will be in effect through June 30, 1989.
