Christian and Shia Muslim militiamen battled with rockets and machine guns in southern Beirut, and police said two people were killed and five wounded. Police said Shia gunmen from various factions joined with Lebanese Justice Minister Nabih Berri’s Amal movement to battle the right-wing Christian Lebanese Forces militia for about an hour. The clash followed a report by the Syrian-backed Amal that it had thwarted a bizarre plot by the Lebanese Forces to assassinate Berri. The militia purportedly assigned a maid in Berri’s home to assassinate him with an explosives-rigged jacket.
