Five people who spent the night on a 100-foot construction crane at UC Santa Cruz to protest the use of animals in science experiments climbed down after reaching an agreement with officials. The protesters climbed the crane after a demonstration by a group of about 100 people against a natural sciences building being constructed on the campus. Five people were arrested for blocking campus offices during the demonstration, which included students and local animal rights activists. 542402661after they reached an agreement with university officials that they would be allowed to inspect animal laboratories in the new building. Officials also said they will not arrest the protesters. “We are all concerned about animals rights and the way they are used in research,” said Charles Daniel, associate academic vice chancellor at the university. A spokesman for the protesters said the new lab means increased sue of animals in experiments currently restricted to mice and rabbits.
