Japan Reacts to Trade Bill
Japanese leaders reacted sharply today to the approval of an omnibus trade bill by the House of Representatives and urged President Reagan to veto it quickly.
The bill, passed Thursday by a vote of 312 to 107, targets foreign markets closed to U.S. industry.
“The government of Japan will continue to reiterate its apprehension to the U.S. side, the Administration in particular, hoping strongly that such a bill will not be enacted,” Foreign Minister Sosuke Uno said.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Keizo Obuchi, in a nationally televised news conference, warned that Japan-U.S. relations and the world economy will suffer if the Senate approves the bill.
He said, however, “I have strong expectations that in the final stage the bill will not be passed, the Senate included.”
