Area Roundup : Surfing Competition Starts Today

Many of the nation’s top surfers will compete in the $15,000 Op South Coast Surf Classic today through Sunday at Salt Creek Beach Park at Laguna Niguel.

The event is the fifth stop on the 1988 Budweiser U.S. Professional Tour of Surfing and Bodysurfing.

Competition begins each day at 7 a.m. Finals are scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tom Fears, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will direct the fifth Nationwide Pro Football Search tryout camp Saturday and Sunday at UC Irvine.

Pro scouts from the NFL are expected to attend, including representatives from the Raiders, the Atlanta Falcons, the San Diego Chargers, the Canadian Football League and European teams.

Players are urged to be in top shape, as they will be put through a series of strenuous drills. A registration fee of $60 is required. For information, call 495-6457.

The Exchange Club of Brea will sponsor its sixth golf tournament for the prevention of child abuse April 29 at Industry Hills Golf Course.
