Cal State L.A. Publisher Fired

Share

The firing Zyda for reporting the facts at Cal State L.A. is symptomatic of the leadership style at that university. The university is poorly administered and the administration is not interested in student needs or concerns.

The administration only responds to a problem after it occurs and does not take any steps in the prevention of problems, whether it be for safety, security, classroom seating, funds or campus maintenance.

As a student at Cal State L.A., there is a growing feeling that the university president is not concerned with students, but spends a great deal of time socializing, fund raising, and putting on the appearance of a great university.

This may be verified by following the events of recent years that chronicle the neglect to the university. The blatant theft of university funds and equipment, the poor maintenance of the campus caused by wasted time and materials (not for a lack of them), the reaction and lack of preparedness for the earthquake, the poor morale among students and professors, and the lack of quality time spent on campus by the president.

The reporting of these facts and many others not reported that are widely known on campus has put the university newspaper in jeopardy and in fact has suppressed the freedom of expression on this campus. While I do not know the fired publisher, I can understand her plight and support her return only because of the fact that she has been bold enough to report the facts.

It is my hope that there will be a change in the administration for the better. However, that is doubtful without a major upheaval in the current system.
