As a taxpayer, I’m interested in how the people in our government spend your money and mine.

I read in The Times (Part I, April 14) that the federal Drug Enforcement Agency will issue to “each of its 341 South Florida agents a 9-millimeter Colt semiautomatic submachine gun, which will fire three bursts every time an agent pulls the trigger,” and which weighs 5.75 pounds and is nearly 29 inches long, the DEA’s version being modified to carry a clip of 32 rounds of 9-millimeter ammunition.

In addition, all DEA agents were issued 15-shot 9-millimeter automatic sidearms as their primary, personal weapons.

After giving us all this detailed information, the final paragraph of the story says, “The price of the guns was not disclosed. (DEA spokesman Jack) Hook said that is a government secret.”

Why?
