Sikh extremists shot to death a leader of a Sikh political party and his bodyguard hours after Indian authorities declared a security alert in the state of Punjab, prompted by the massacre of 18 people by Sikh gunmen. Four gunmen killed Sardul Singh Mudhul, a leader of the moderate Sikh Akali Dal Party, and his bodyguard in Mudhal village, 150 miles northwest of Chandigarh, the Sikhs’ holy city, police said. Mudhul was slain because of his opposition to creation of an independent Sikh state, police added.
