The Soviet Union made its first appearance at a U.S. trade show in 15 years Sunday, putting the pride of its Byelorussian auto works on display at the International MINExpo in Chicago. Valentin Morozov, first deputy minister of the automotive industry, told reporters that Soviet participation in the show marked a new initiative to open U.S. markets to Soviet goods. The only Soviet-built piece of equipment on display in the sprawling exhibition is a giant, 180-ton capacity quarry dump truck. Soviet heavy machinery will be marketed through Soviet-run Global Technologies Group Ltd. of New York to compete with such U.S. firms as Caterpillar and John Deere in mining and other heavy industries.
