Varian Associates Inc. said net earnings of $9.3 million for the second quarter of fiscal 1988 more than doubled the $3.9 million earned in the year-ago period. Second-quarter sales rose to $299 million, up 25%. Orders totaled $325 million, up 34% from 1987. The Palo Alto-based high-tech firm attributed the gains primarily to the turnaround of Varian’s Semiconductor Equipment Group.
