Local News in Brief : 15 Years for Drunk Driver
A man with a lengthy record of drunk driving was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in state prison for an accident in which his pickup truck smashed head-on into a car, killing a Palmdale woman and her unborn child.
San Fernando Superior Court Judge John Major imposed the sentence on Brian E. Sass, 24, of El Monte, who was convicted April 4 of second-degree murder in the death of Beverly Ryan, 28, as well as one count each of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run, and two counts of drunk driving.
Prosecutors said Sass was not charged with the murder of the fetus because it was not sufficiently developed to be legally considered a human being.
