The Eurovision Song Contest--an annual event that boasts a TV audience of 500 million worldwide--visits the Emerald Isle Saturday, putting up the ideal shop window for an Irish Tourist Board promotion. Singers from 21 countries are competing in the contest, which music critics and pop fans have decried for offering banal music with instantly forgettable lyrics. Only one international pop smash, the Swedish group Abba, won the contest and continued on to success. The event is recognized by host countries as an excellent promotional tool for tourism, and thus is hotly pursued.
