Share

A man wielding a high-powered assault rifle ambushed an armored car guard Thursday in Hacienda Heights, wounding him slightly in a brief gun battle and fleeing after an unsuccessful robbery attempt.

The gunman, who surprised the guard at 9 a.m. as he was making a bank delivery, fired an estimated 20 rounds from what was believed to be an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, which resembles the U.S. military M-16, Sheriff’s Deputy Hal Grant said.

The Loomis Transport Service guard, Christopher Orr, fired several shots with his revolver before the gunman fled with two accomplices in a car, which was found a mile from the Bank of America branch near the Puente Hills Mall, Deputy Van Mosley said.

Orr was wounded by shrapnel in his face, forearm and back, and was treated and released from Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, a hospital spokesman said.

Deputies were searching for the gunman and his companions.
