An 18-year-old San Ysidro man was listed in critical condition at UCSD Medical Center on Thursday, a day after he was shot in the head while sitting in a parked car outside his apartment building, San Diego Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Herman Salas was hospitalized in the trauma unit after being ferried by a Life Flight helicopter from Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista, Robinson said.

Police were called Wednesday night to the Vista Terrace Apartments in the 3500 block of Beyer Boulevard to investigate a shooting. Police learned there that Salas had been taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital by friends, Robinson said.

Witnesses said Salas was sitting in his car in the apartment complex parking lot about 8:45 p.m., when a 17-year-old boy walked up to the car and fired a small-caliber handgun through the window on the driver’s side, striking Salas in the head, Robinson said.

The 17-year-old was arrested at the scene and remained in police custody Thursday.
